18th century witch

Since I started to involve myself more with the 18th century, and especially since I made the black "Maria Theresa" dress I was curious about the history and the period, and while reading up on Maria Theresa I came across some interesting details.

I was a high-shcooler in the 1980-ies, and back then we didn't learned much about MT, except that she was a Habsburg, and we don't like the Habsburgs (the opressive, oustider -nothungarian- family who ruled our country for centuries). Reading up on her lifeI learned so much about her, inculding how she wanted to drag out of our country from the medieval period, by its hair, how much she did for the country, and how the last witch-trials, and then the banning of torture and whitch-hunting is also can be tied to her.

So, when we were planning a short and funny sceene for the Christmas party of our reenactment group, it was kind of obvious that I will take the 18th century part.

I always wanted to make a pair of black stays, I did had the fabric, and the spider-printed one for lining. I used the pattern I made in the summer, when I made my pink one, expet, this time I also made a stomacher, with two different sides, one with the spiders, the other plain black.

The black petticoat in 18th century style is really not big of a deal, practically two rectangle.

The biggest deal (aside from making the stays) was making the hat. I had a plain, black hat since I planned the bee-queen dress a few years ago, but then, when we finally realized it, Bob made her own hat to go with the dress, so the base I had was waiting for a purpouse.

I did, what I usually do when I want a beregere hat, cut a few rows of the crown, iron it, this time, since the hat was softer than the previous ones I worked with, I had to apply a generous amount of startch.
Then added some black ribbon around it, and as usual, stuck a few hatpins through it.

Our little scene was rather succesful, and the interesting thing is that I never really liked black, I do not wear it, definetly not in my modern clothes, but with the black  Francaise gown, and this black and white witchy thing, it is kind of growing on me...
Look, I even had spider-web patterned stockings!
I'd never though I would like this much the black lipstick and the white mascara.
And the icing on the cake was that I could recruit Chris for a tiny part, and boy, the punchline involving him got the biggest laugh.
